We understand what great learning AND great teaching look like, and we are intentional in how we nurture both at every age and stage. Our recent accreditation as a World Class High Performance Learning School reinforced the importance not just of learning well, but of recognising the various aspects of high-quality learning. This underpins our firm belief that every child, regardless of their starting point, can achieve at the highest level when provided with the right environment and support.
Developing metacognition — learning how to learn — is just as important as using the best pedagogical approaches and resources in our teaching. This extends to our purpose-built learning spaces and to our highly skilled team of teachers, specialists, and support staff who support the children and young people in our care. From Early Years through to Sixth Form, every pupil benefits from the expertise and dedication of professionals in their field, setting them up for success in whatever path they choose to pursue.
Introducing Our Teaching and Learning Framework
This academic year, we launched our Teaching and Learning Framework, a key step in embedding the principles of High Performance Learning into our unique international context. With a pupil body drawn from a wide range of nationalities, languages, and cultures, our classrooms are enriched by diversity, giving every child a broader perspective and deeper learning experiences.
The framework is designed to:
- Provide clarity and consistency in expectations, without prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach. Concrete examples of ‘what this looks like in practice’ will be developed alongside teaching staff as part of our longer-term planning.
- Reflect the developmental needs and pedagogical approaches that are appropriate for each age and stage, from three to eighteen.
- Support deep professional reflection and dialogue in a safe, non-judgmental environment, supporting teacher growth.
- Be used as a foundation for ongoing professional development, not an add-on or a tick list.
- Support professional growth, encouraging teachers to engage in deep reflection, dialogue, and continuous development.
- Guide strategic planning, enabling school leaders to set meaningful goals for professional development and resource provision.
Learning from Research and Expertise
At the start of this school year, during our whole staff meeting, we welcomed Cat Scutt, Deputy CEO of the Chartered College of Teaching, who shared some of the research that underpins the importance of great teaching and offered an explicit framework to support the learning and teaching experience for all pupils. She highlighted how reflective practice, as well as the growth in our skills throughout our professional journey, leads to expertise and confidence in both subject knowledge and pedagogical practice. Her insights reaffirmed our commitment to professional growth and to providing pupils with the highest-quality educational experience.
Relationships at the Core
Underlying all of this is the strength of relationships. At BSN, we pride ourselves on knowing our pupils well. Our class sizes foster close interaction between pupils and staff, further strengthened by the contribution of our support staff and specialists, all of whom add to the positive relationships and care for our children and young people. This ensures tailored support in the early years and inspires ambitious challenge for older learners. These relationships are the foundation of a world-class education and a vital driver of pupil success.
