Being Part of Something Bigger: How Associations and Accreditations Benefit Your Child’s Education

I have just returned to the Netherlands from a conference held in the UK — the annual gathering of HMC, The Heads’ Conference, a UK-based association of school leaders from quality schools in Britain and overseas.

What Is HMC?

HMC is a well-established organisation that has been in existence for almost 160 years. It was founded when twelve Headmasters (they were all male then) of what we now term British public schools came together to share best practice. It was the first association of school leaders established globally and, over time, has grown to include Heads of outstanding independent schools worldwide, not simply boys’ boarding schools in the UK.

How HMC Benefits Our School and Pupils

The benefits of belonging to a high-quality association are many. It provides opportunities for collaboration, professional learning, and the sharing of expertise. HMC offers development courses for Heads and other school leaders, alongside support and guidance through its member services.

Looking outwards and forwards is an integral part of maintaining the highest standards of education for every child at the BSN, and of providing the best professional development and support for every member of staff, which, of course, leads directly to the best outcomes for the children in our care. This should reassure our community of the excellence of all that we do and of our continued commitment to being innovative, collaborative, and determined as we move forward.

Positive Relationships, High Standards, and Inspiration

So, you may wonder what last week’s conference offered. For me, collegiality is probably at the top of the list. There are almost 400 members of HMC, and I have been part of this network for over a decade — across three schools — building friendships with people who do similar roles, understand the challenges, and are always willing to share ideas and advice.

The second key element is quality. HMC has a rigorous accreditation process, ensuring that choosing an HMC school —whether for your child or as a place of work —guarantees high standards within an ambitious and supportive environment. HMC schools are comparable with the best in the world, often adopting recognised inspection and evaluation frameworks, or curricula such as the UK National Curriculum or the International Baccalaureate, as we do at The British School in the Netherlands.

Associations such as HMC also provide practical services and inspiring speakers at their professional events. These include advice on governance, leadership development, curriculum design, and school improvement. This most recent conference featured workshops and sessions on artificial intelligence — a particularly relevant topic for schools today and one in which our own EdTech team continues to lead, ensuring that humans remain at the centre of all we do in technology. There were also sessions on executive coaching, alumni engagement, and managing transformational change.

As always, we were privileged to hear from a range of inspiring speakers, both from within and beyond education, who reminded us of the importance of leadership and relationships within schools. This year’s speakers included a firefighter who revolutionised decision-making for emergency responders in the UK, a member of the judiciary who has held the government to account, and a researcher in learning science. We returned energised, full of new ideas and reflections on how to make a great school even better.

Breadth of Perspective and Opportunity Through International Associations

HMC is not the only organisation of which we are proud members. The BSN is also a High Performance Learning World Class School, a member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), and of the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS). Each provides something distinct, and our international associations, in particular, align perfectly with our global outlook and community.

Membership in these organisations follows a rigorous external accreditation process, providing a recognised quality mark for the high standards of our educational offer. This places the BSN among the best schools globally, as well as those closer to home here in the Netherlands.
