Welcome to a new podcast series hosted by Louise Simpson, CEO of The British School in the Netherlands. Educator, Storyteller, Detective
Previously Head of German at Senior School, Mike is our school archivist and has been involved with the BSN for 53 years and counting! From inspiring generations of students to creating the award-winning Eco-Garden and building the school’s archives from scratch, Mike has been instrumental in preserving BSN’s legacy. Mike only intended to stay at the BSN for a few years, but he was so taken with the school’s ethos and community that he never left.

From Acorn to Oak
Since its foundation in 1931 by Gwen Brunton Jones, the BSN has overcome many obstacles, moved to several locations, and grown into one of the leading international schools in the Netherlands. Serving nearly 2000 students and almost 90 nationalities. The remarkable journey is a testament to the school’s ability to embrace change while staying true to its core values, excelling in teaching and learning, offering a breadth of experience, and demonstrating outstanding care for its community.
Always Looking Forward
Recent years have brought even more positive change: a refreshed logo symbolising BSN’s heritage and international identity, new leadership under CEO Louise Simpson, and initiatives that prepare students to become compassionate, confident global citizens. As BSN approaches its centenary, its story remains one of resilience, progress, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
